Take Me Dancing

for fun & active living

in 2016...

Her:
Dear, now that we're into a New Year,
I have an idea to work toward better fitness.

I'd love for us to go dancing... perhaps once a week.
It will make me very happy and will be a great experience.

Smiling, Square Dancing Couple

Him:
...but you know that I have two left feet!

Her:
Your feet work just fine and the kind of dancing that
interests me only requires that you can walk
...and I know that you can do that.

Besides, new dancer sessions for newcomers like us
are taking place in several B.C. cities.

Square Dancing Feet

Him:
Dancing doesn't come naturally to me
and I don't want to look foolish in front of others.

Her:

Everyone will be learning and will feel the same way but,
with a patient instructor and no pressure, you'll
become more confident and see how much fun it is.

It will start to feel natural.
Besides, this style of
dancing
uses upper body hand and arm movements,

so there are no difficult steps--just walk.
You can do it and you'll soon feel accomplished.
It's something new to discover!

Him:
What about the expense - can we afford it?

Her:
In many B.C. cities the first few sessions are free
to see if you like it, with no obligation.
It's one of the most economical dance activities and
you'll agree that we have to invest in our fitness level,
working toward better health.

Him:
What about all the chores around home that need doing?

Her:
We need some regular "together time" - an interest
away from home that we can share in equally.
The chores will always be there.

Him:
Hmm? You say I'll only need to walk... no pressure...
should be fun... can't lose with a free tryout...
is it that square dancing you've always wanted to try?
Back in my school days it was so old fashioned and awkward...
but I admit it was fun.

Her:
Well, it has evolved. It's better than what you and I did in school.
Today's style of square dancing has replaced "Turkey in the Straw"
with music ranging from pop to country
and show tunes to golden oldies.

Lady square dancing to the call "allemande left"

Him:
Who's going to be at the dances?

Her:
People just like you and me.
People who want to have
genuine fun and lots of laughs.
We all want to improve our
physical and mental well-being
and to make
new friends in a healthy social atmosphere.

Youth Square Dancers at Competition

Him:
Are there square dance competitions?

Her:
Apart from who can listen best to the caller-teacher's instructions,
no - there's no competition.
The only exception is
the pre-teens and teens in B.C. and Washington
who do compete once a year at a big Festival
and that keeps them interested and focussed.

Him:
Will it be all couples?

Her:
Not necessarily. The recreation has something to offer all people:
singles, the handicapable, pre-teens and teens.
Many of the singles, especially the ladies, are learning
both the left and right positions in a dance couple.
That way, they're active all the time.
In some cities, there are also clubs for the same sex community.

Him:
Do I have to look like I just rode out of a western movie?

Her:
No, dear. Comfortable, dressy-casual is appropriate to
square dance
with low-rise footwear that won't mark the floor.
If we want to go to special dances later, all you need is a
long-sleeved shirt and pants and I can choose an ankle-
length dress called a Prairie Skirt. I just might like to dress
the part in traditional square dance wear, crinoline and all.

So, they started new square dancer sessions and had a ball!

By only the second session, he became real enthusiastic about continuing.

They began square dancing with their new friends in cities near and far,

A "sea of square dancers" at a National Square Dance Convention

travelling to join hundreds and thousands on dance floors at Festivals and Conventions,

Cruising Square Dancers

discovering square dance cruises and world tours,

Round dancers doing a twirl

and even taking optional new dancer sessions in choreographed ballroom

known as round dancing, square dancing’s companion dance,

where nobody has to lead because the moves are "cued" live.

It was surprising to learn that the moves in square and round dancing are taught

around the world in English, so they could make new dance friends globally.

...and they did dance their way into 2016

for fun and to improve their fitness,

participating once a week and

agreeing that they'd discovered

real enjoyable "together time!"

Him:
Honey, you were right about us needing something fun
to share together and stay active, improving our fitness level.
Today's style of square dancing was it!
You really take good care of me.

Her:
Thanks, dear - you're worth it and, as you've come to know,
I'm usually right.

   Him (quietly to himself):
Happy wife... happy life!

Rhythm Rounds round dance club

Vernon's Round Dance Club

Sessions are underway, call to
inquire about the next opportunity to join in!

In January, 2016, this group offered 3 occasions

on Sunday afternoons to try this fun dance form.

Round dancing is choreographed ballroom

done to live cues heard over the p.a. system.

Dancers began learning the ballroom style version

of the two-step and continued every Sunday,

1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Initially 10 sessions, the instructors offered 4 to 6

additional sessions based upon interest.

Everyone welcome, including square dancers or

absolute newcomers to round dancing!

Casual attire - soft-soled, comfortable shoes suggested.

Weekly coffee, tea and refreshments.

Fun & easy to learn!

The caring, considerate instructors start by using

a teaching method called "7, 5, 3"  then continue

with a "1 step at a time" program.

Men feel more confident with this dance form

because they don't have to lead their partner.

All dancers first learn the steps which are then cued

over a microphone to the rhythm of popular tunes.

It's a dance for couples but everyone is welcome!
